Project Responsibilities
Andrew manages projects from concept to completion. As the lead consultant, he is responsible for articulating the creative vision for each project, combining his love of museums and heritage with his experience in the industry to conceptualise brandings and graphic identities, and experiment with alternative architectural approaches towards spatial design.
Keenly aware of spatial and operational challenges in terms of capacity and visitor flow, behaviour and orientation, Andrew creates innovative solutions and interpretive experiences in which the storytelling and visitor experience take precedence. He extends his remit to branding and design consultation, playing a key advisory role to both clients and wider design teams.
Relevant Experience
Andrew has a strong academic and professional background in graphic design. Before founding Tandem in 2002, he worked for two of the leading design agencies in Belfast, Triplicate Isis and Hamill. In both these roles he managed a range of high-profile accounts, drawing on his strong management and organisational skills as well as his design flair.
At Tandem, Andrew has merged his expertise in design with his passion for heritage and the built environment. He now has over 20 years’ experience in design and interpretation consultation. Andrew brings enormous enthusiasm and vision to every Tandem project but has the critical management experience and skill to ensure that the vision for each project is realised to its fullest potential.
Professional Development
Andrew is an ardent believer in the value that heritage projects can bring to local communities. Beyond his professional remit, he has facilitated workshops with a number of community groups in Northern Ireland, helping them to carry their ideas through to finished exhibitions.
Andrew’s passion for and thorough understanding of the built environment is evident in all of Tandem’s projects, and from fit-out to graphic identity, his designs are strongly sympathetic to its surroundings. This track record is evident across several projects in listed structures and national monuments including Dunluce Castle, The White House, No. 5 Vicars’ Hill, Ulster Hall, The National Library of Ireland and Belfast City Hall.
Andrew’s involvement with local architecture has led to commissions for the University of Ulster School of Architecture (Your Space or Mine?, Behind Closed Doors), PLACE (Year Book, Our Belfast) and various joint ventures with Consarc (Down County Museum Extension Interpretive Plan, Causeway Coastal Route, Lagan Legacy). Andrew is also a member of the Irish Museums Association, Association for Heritage Interpretation, Institute of Designers in Ireland and the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society.
