The Guard Room exhibition helps to develop the rich cultural heritage of Carrickfergus, building on our other interpretive projects in this historic town.
Carrickfergus’s military history was the inspiration for this project, which re-interpreted the original Guard Room of the Antrim Artillery militia, told within the context of the 800-year history of the wider site which includes Carrickfergus Museum and Castle.
We worked closely with Mid & East Antrim Borough Council to recreate the Guard Room and draw attention to this site which had previously been overlooked in the military history of Carrickfergus.
The exhibition display structure, designed in a modular bookshelves format, was used to subtly recall the historic setting. Through a mix of graphic panels, interactive elements and setworks, these interpretive devices are subtly integrated into the exhibition to tell the story of the Guard Room.
We also included a media album to allow visitors to dive deeper into a rich archive of images related to the history. The re-creation of a cell as a set piece in the exhibition also provided a tactile method for visitors to engage with the story of the building.
By bringing this history
to life, the exhibition provided
a link between the Carrickfergus Museum, Castle and wider heritage of the town for
visitors and residents to enjoy.
