Shannon Estuary Way

Failte Ireland

Where Ireland's longest river flows into the wild waters of the Atlantic Ocean

Tandem designed a suite of outdoor interpretive panels for the Shannon Estuary Way to provide visitors with interesting interpretive experiences and encourage them to continue their journey. They feature stories about the people, history and archaeology of the Shannon estuary, interwoven with information about the landscape, geology and wildlife.

Working as part of a wider design team, and following consultations and stakeholder workshops, we researched, selected images and commissioned illustrations that best captured the stories.

We were also responsible for developing a distinct brand identity for the Shannon Estuary Way which complements the existing Wild Atlantic Way brand identity and design toolkit, while remaining unique to the region. Our panels take inspiration from the notable ‘Gandelows' of the region, echoing the silhouette of the flat-bottomed boat.

The Shannon Estuary Way has provided an optimal framework for future similar initiatives, which are already underway. The interpretive approach creates a unique sense of place along the journey, that is a worthy de-tour from the established Wild Atlantic Way route.

The panels offer recognisable touchpoints to follow, while our unique segmented mapping system helps to orientate and engage visitors along the way.
