Seamus Heaney Scoping Study

Mid Ulster District Council DAERA application

The trail, intended as an extension of the visitor offering of Seamus Heaney HomePlace will focus on site specific poetry of Seamus Heaney.

In May 2018 Tandem were appointed by Mid Ulster District Council to develop a Scoping Study to identify the potential suitability of a Seamus Heaney HomePlace Trail that would draw together a number of locations that influenced the Poet and his work.

Through the Study, it became clear that the overarching theme for the network of sites should be ‘poetry and place’, and that this would enhance and extend the offering of Seamus Heaney HomePlace.

Our interpretation and design team developed design concepts that were unique to each site while linking them through a common visual language and the overarching theme.

Interventions included interpretation signage, a digital multimedia offerings, bespoke seating, interpretive walking trails and specially commissioned sculptural pieces.

Each bespoke offering communicates Seamus Heaney’s poetry in different tangible, intangible, audible and artistic ways.

Our final Scoping Study document clearly outlines the benefit to interpretation at six locations within Bellaghy and the surrounding area. Concept designs and budgets outline the potential for each site, while our interpretation write up identifies audiences, learning outcomes and an interpretive rationale for each location.

The funding application was submitted to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs and was awarded in early 2019. The project was rolled out during 2020.
