Spanning across five key sites in Mid Ulster, the Open Ground experience offers visitors the opportunity to engage, listen and reflect on Seamus Heaney’s poems, in the very locations that inspired his work.
Interpretation at each unique site draws upon important works from Seamus Heaney’s collection. Remaining sensitive and true to the surroundings, interpretation takes different forms at each location. Seating at prominent viewpoints to encourage visitors to sit within the landscape, listen and reflect with audio posts and beautiful graphics completing the suite.
As part of the trail, Tandem worked closely with Noho to develop a digital experience. As part of the offering, trigger points at sites allow visitors to access augmented reality in the form of mystical scenes which reveal otherwise hidden/unseen facets of the view in front of the visitor.
Specially commissioned sculptures, inspired by the writing of Seamus Heaney have been installed at the Eelworks and Magherafelt, in addition to beautifully carved wooden sculptures nestled into the trail at Long Point Wood.
Across all sites, visitors can expect to be motivated, not only by the landscape around them but the words of Seamus Heaney intrinsically tied to each site.
