As part of a single party framework, Tandem completed the design of a number of outdoor interpretive panels for the Discover Connemara driving route. Working as part of the wider design team, we developed the interpretive content and design of a number of orientation and discovery points for the Discover Connemara driving route which was developed as a result of the Connemara Infrastructure and Interpretation Plan 2012.
The project aimed to deliver Orientation Points at the main gateways to the region in addition to a number of Discovery Points — interpretive panels featuring stories about the landscape, geology and wildlife, the people, their history and archaeology. Primarily the discovery trail was developed to deliver messages about the distinctiveness, separateness, cultural and natural richness of Connemara and the essential message that it is ‘wild at heart’.
As part of the design team, Tandem were responsible for developing the overall design style for the interpretation panels including sourcing images and commissioning new illustrations to complement the stories being told. We were also responsible for the development of the maps on each of the panels. To aid visitor orientation we chose to create a single map for all panels to create a familiarity with the orientation style.
The Wild At Heart brand identity preceded the development of all orientation and discovery point interpretation, therefore it was important that all designs complemented the existing brand while remaining in keeping with the Wild Atlantic Way brand identify and design toolkit. While our previous work on the Wild Atlantic Way project helped to inform our approach, we ensured that the Discover Connemara panels were easily identifiable as a stand alone driving route.
